Moral of the story: kaya lang naman nagsi-sinungaling ang mga lalaki Eh for a good and noble reason.
Getting Ready to Quit * Set a date for quitting. If possible, have a friend quit smoking with you. * Notice when and why you smoke. Try to find the things in your daily life that you often do while smoking (such as drinking your morning cup of coffee or driving a car). * Change your smoking routines: Keep your cigarettes in a different place. Smoke with your other hand. Don't do anything else when smoking. Think about how you feel when you smoke. * Smoke only in certain places, such as outdoors. * When you want a cigarette, wait a few minutes. Try to think of something to do instead of smoking; you might chew gum or drink a glass of water. * Buy one pack of cigarettes at a time. Switch to a brand of cigarettes you don't like.
On the Day You Quit * Get rid of all your cigarettes. Put away your ashtrays. * Change your morning routine. When you eat breakfast, don't sit in the same place at the kitchen table. Stay busy. * When you get the urge to smoke, do something else instead. * Carry other things to put in your mouth, such as gum, hard candy, or a toothpick. * Reward yourself at the end of the day for not smoking. See a movie or go out and enjoy your favorite meal.
Staying Quit * Don't worry if you are sleepier or more short-tempered than usual; these feelings will pass. * Try to exercise-take walks or ride a bike. * Consider the positive things about quitting, such as how much you like yourself as a non-smoker, health benefits for you and your family, and the example you set for others around you. A positive attitude will help you through the tough times. * When you feel tense, try to keep busy, think about ways to solve the problem, tell yourself that smoking won't make it any better, and go do something else. * Eat regular meals. Feeling hungry is sometimes mistaken for the desire to smoke. * Start a money jar with the money you save by not buying cigarettes. * Let others know that you have quit smoking-most people will support you. Many of your smoking friends may want to know how you quit. It's good to talk to others about your quitting. * If you slip and smoke, don't be discouraged. Many former smokers tried to stop several times before they finally succeeded. Quit again. If you need more help, see your doctor. He or she may prescribe nicotine gum or a nicotine patch to help you break your addiction to cigarettes.
How to Deal With an Office Jerk
Robert M. Detman, for Yahoo! HotJobs
Office life can have its ups and downs, but having to endure a jerk can make it miserable. Office jerks take on many forms, and thus require creative strategies for dealing with them. Handling Six Common Types The Loud Phone-Talker. "Obviously the first step is to pull them aside quietly and ask them to lower their voice when using the phone," says Julie Jansen, a career coach, consultant, and trainer. "If this doesn't stop them, you could dish out the same treatment and stand near their cube on your cell phone and talk loudly. Or you can hold up a sign that says, 'Please turn volume down.'" The Hang-Arounder. When confronting the co-worker who chronically lingers to chat when you are trying to make a deadline -- a subtle jerk, but a jerk nonetheless -- try standing up when they enter your office or cube. "The unspoken message of your body language will clearly tell him or her to keep it brief and head for the door," says Ken Lloyd, author of "Jerks at Work: How to Deal With People Problems and Problem People." The Idea Stealer. There is a strong possibility that this jerk can't distinguish between a good idea and a bad one. "Somewhere along the way, slip in a really bad idea and let the jerk steal that," Lloyd says. However, beware that this might only encourage the jerk to become worse. The Meeting Monopolizer. Get creative. "Try eliminating the chairs and making it a standup meeting," Lloyd suggests. The monopolizer will likely get thrown off and won't have time to settle into the usual routine of unproductive dominance. The Bully. Remember, you're not in high school anymore. "Hold your ground and refuse to be bullied," says Steve Piazzale, a career and life coach who runs BayAreaCareerCoach.com. "They'll usually back off over time." The Boss. Sometimes dealing with a jerk should not be your problem, particularly if you have a manager who is a jerk. In this case you might take a look around the company and notice several jerks. "This may be part of the company culture," Piazzale says. "In which case get out!" More General Coping Strategies Passive. Avoidance is the most obvious solution if you don't want a confrontation with any type of office jerk. "You can go to your boss and ask him to intervene," says Jansen. Or, if things are really unbearable, you could ask to be relocated to another part of the office. Active. Avoidance can backfire if the jerk continues the annoying behavior. Try talking to the person. "Difficult people don't always know they're being difficult," Jansen says. "People generally don't have a very high level of self-awareness, so specific and constructive feedback is important." If you must confront a jerk, it is wise to take the high road. Career coach Piazzale says, "Try to understand where the behavior is coming from, and tailor your response to that."

PGMA, FG Mike Arroyo, and Chavit Singson were flying on Presidential Plane. PGMA looked at FG Mike, chuckled and said, "You know, I could throw a Php1,000 bill out of the window right now and make somebody very happy." FG Mike shrugged her shoulders and replied, "I could throw ten Php100 bills out of the window and make ten people very happy." Chavit added, "That being the case, I could throw one hundred Php10 bills out of the window and make a hundred people very happy."
Hearing their exchange, the pilot rolled his eyes and said to his co-pilot, "Such bigshots back there. Shit, I could throw all of them out of the window and make millions of Filipinos very happy."

77. Still in text mode, a trick from Microsoft word to apply hi-light to your text hit Ctrl+Shift+ < or > to resize your text, to your preferred font size. Pressing Ctrl key while you are typing also gives you a free transform box temporarily and will go if you release it. Resizing text also works by pressing Ctrl+T (on selected layer, not when you are typing). It still retains as an editable text layer after.

CODE
Mentioned before with more explanation:
- Pressed F to switch to 3 different viewing mode... when I first try it I said "wtf? what it's for?" Well, if you are sick of painting your image on the corners just to find yourself resizing your current image window, with F you can pan way outside your image. Happy corner painting!!
- Create a new file, 500x500 px, create a new layer, get a standard brush and paint a dot on the top center of your image (like the number 12 position on a clock). Press Ctrl+Alt+T, it will duplicate your original layer and free transform the new one. Move the pivot point (the circle with little dot in it found when you are free transforming something) to the center of your image, rotate your image 30 degrees to the right and hit OK to confirm the transform
now.........
Be excited..........
Hit Ctrl+Shift+Alt+T 10 times and see what happens!
81. When using the "move tool" you can select any layer by holding down the CTL key(CMD on a Mac) and clicking on the part of the layer on the canvas with your mouse. This way you won't have to go to the Layers palette every time and you don't have to keep checking on or off the auto select options for the move tool.
82. You can link up layers without going into the layers palette, by selecting the layer (how I just mentioned above) and holding down CTL + Shift(CMD + SHIT on a Mac) for each additional layer you want to link up. You can unlink them by clicking on the layer again.
83. You can delete more than one layer at a time.......by linking up all the layer you want to delete, and holding down CTL(CMD on a Mac) while you click on the garbage icon to delete the layer.
84. When using the type tool you can ok it by pressing CTL + Enter(CMD + Enter on a Mac) instead of clicking on the check mark on the options.
85. If you have more than one type layer, and want to make any of the following changes color/font/size/alignment/initializing to all of the type layers at the same time.....All you have to do is link up the type layer, hold down the Shift key and in the options for the type tool make your change i.e. color, size, etc.
86. You can use your number pad to change opacity for a layer.... I.e. type 5 and the opacity will be 50; type 55 and the opacity will be 55. You can use the number pad for any tool that uses opacity...like the airbrush tool, stamp tool, brush, gradient, etc.
87. Pressing Tab key will hide the Tools palette and any other palette that you have on the stage. Pressing "F" will change between Full Screen modes. Using these two tips you can view your work Full Screen without any palettes.(You can press CTL+Alt+0 to fit your work to the screen, or you can press CTL+0 to zoom to 100%)
88. Pressing the "+" and "-" keys while holding down CTL+Alt will resize the whole document window, not just the work area.
89. You can delete a layer by holding down the "Alt" key and pressing "L" twice......actually now with Photoshop 7 you got to press "L" three times. It's not actually a keyboard shortcut, but it's a quick way to do it....don't know if it works on a MAC.
90. Pan documents with the space bar.
91. Ctrl+click a layer (in layers palette) to select it's transparency.
92. Ctrl+Alt+click between 2 layers in the palette to group them.
93. Alt + click in “add layer mask” button to add a black layer mask (instead of a white one).
94. When you select something, pressing Ctrl+J will copy the selected area and add another layer with the copied area - opposing copying the layer, making a new layer, and pasting it.
95. To glue the palettes together (all palettes combined into one strip), you just drag & drop a palette onto the end of another palette (watch the rectangle that indicates where the palette will get attached to).
96. Hold down Alt while Burning to Dodge instead, and vice versa.
97. Ctrl-click a layer to select an objects; alternatively, you may select more than one object/s in more than 1 layer by holding Shift while using the method just mentioned (Ctrl-click). To deselect, just press Ctrl+D.
98. If you have a mini scroll on your mouse, you may use that to zoom in (scroll up) or zoom out (scroll down).
99. Need to locate a layer quick? Use the Move Tool (V) and right click on the area the object lays. There should now be a “cursor-menu” with all the layers that is in that particular area. Now take a good guess and see which one of them fits the shoe; select a layer and Ctrl-Click the layer in the Layer Palette - see if the selection traces the object you desired to edit/find. Useful for those messy people (i.e. me!).
100. Need to get rid of a background quick? Assuming you at least know how to crop around an object, do so. Now press Ctrl+I or Shift+Ctrl+I for Inverse Selection. Press Ctrl+X to %@#!* that part out, and you should be left with the object!
101. Want to save the time from loading All your Photoshop brushes, when your Photoshop accidentally forgets to load them up (happens to me sometimes)? Select the brush tool, and click the little arrow pointing right (located at the top toolbar), next to the Master Diameter tick. Go down to Preset Manager and now there should be a menu of all the brushes currently loaded. Click on the first brush (top left) and scroll down to the bottom. Now hold Shift and click the last brush (bottom right). This should highlight all the brushes. See the “Save Set” to the right in the menu? Click that and name your brush set whatever you want, for this matter I just name it All (so I remember that this brush set contains all the brushes I currently have loaded, and is located near the top when loading the brushes up).
Growing a business requires continuous attention, careful planning and a willingness to take calculated risks. No matter how successful, a business left by its self will go to pot. In the last decade, the cost and risks associated with doing business have risen dramatically, but also opportunities. Drawing from the experiences with small and medium enterprises of its members, the Manila-based Association of Development Finance Institutions in Asia and the Pacific (ADFIAP) proposes:
1) Give priority to new product or service development. Always seek ways to improve what you have to offer and develop means to reinvigorate your own products or services before someone else does. 2) Find new applications for existing products or services. Be sure to establish a communication means between your company and your product/service users to determine how they really use your products. Offering a financial incentive to surface new applications helps too! 3) Remember the easiest sale of them all. You have already spent the money to acquire your customers and build a relationship with them, why not ask what else we can make or provide for them? 4) Know where to get all the answers. All the answers about how your company is doing, where it should go and what it should stop doing, reside within your own customer base. 5) Buy rather than build. Take a gook look at your targeted industry. There usually is a resource limited company that offers viable products and services that relate to yours. Consider buying them versus investing the same money in organic growth alternative. 6) Think out of boundaries. If you just focus on one market, someday you will find your company can no longer effectively compete because someone else beat you to others. 7) Go eCommerce. Establish an effective means, via the Internet for your customers to educate and update themselves, solve their own problems and order your products with a few clicks of the computer mouse. 8) Know when to say “No” and “Stop”. Making or doing something that no longer makes financial sense needs to be dealt with decisively, no matter the, “we have always made those, we have always sold those, or we have always done it that way” commentary. 9) Measure and publish everything. Business practices can only be improved upon if they are written, measured, tracked and periodically audited for effectiveness. All results justify being shared with all employees, good or bad. Always celebrate success publicly, criticize poor performance privately. 10) There is always a price to pay for business growth. There is no clear roadmap on how to best grow your company, each company has its own growth challenges.
Certain businesses put the chances of success in your favor. Other businesses stack the chances of success against you. Here is a list of seven things that you should consider when starting your own company. 1. Will the company be able to maintain high profit margins? Low profit margins are dangerous to your company’s survival. If you only have a tenuous 2% net profit margin and prices rise a few percent, you are in trouble. Higher profit margins allow room for error and changing cost structures. When you think of low profit margins, imagine a guy standing at the edge of Niagara Falls with a little tin cup. He is trying to reach into the torrent of water to pull out a little drink. It is dangerous to place yourself under tons and tons of water to get a little cup full. Similarly, who cares if your business generates millions of dollars in revenue, but only can earn $10,000? It is what you keep that matters. 2. Good Revenue per sale. This is often missed by many. It is difficult to succeed if you are selling a one-dollar product. To make a million dollars means you must sell one million of your product. That’s a lot of sales. If you are selling a $1,000 product then to make a million dollars you only need a thousand sales. Guess which level of sales is an easier to process and fulfill for a smaller company? 3. A proprietary product. Or, at least, a tremendously growing area where all the companies in the field can’t keep up with demand. A proprietary product is one which your company exclusively controls. This means another company can’t just begin producing and selling your product. Patents and copyrights are two ways to secure a proprietary product. 4. Something that you love to do. It is difficult to do something well if you don’t feel passionate about it. Choose to build a business in a field that you love, and you will find yourself enjoying it. This will help lead to success. Never just enter a business because the financial numbers seem to indicate a great business. To really make money demands growing a business, and this will take years. Be sure it’s something you want to do. Something related to a life-long hobby or interest is ideal. 5. Will the business have good cash flow? It is possible for a business to be generating excellent sales and profits, and yet be losing cash. You need cash to pay bills. A cash strapped business is a business that will struggle to grow. Do a cash flow projection for your start-up business. 6. What are the growth prospects for your business? What will be required for you to grow the company? Many entrepreneurs start a business and are happy when they see it making money. They are often not as happy when they realize that profits have plateaued. Think about how you will grow. If you start a restaurant, for example, your profits will certainly level off. You will only have so many customers eating at your restaurant in any given year. To grow would require adding a second restaurant. But you cannot run two restaurants as you do one restaurant. You can be on top of everything at one location, but you must be away at least part of the time when you have two restaurants. And what if you had ten? As you grow you will need to learn to delegate. You will need multiple locations. Compare this to a mail-order business. It can be run from one location. Yet, sales are essentially potentially unlimited with only small structural changes to the business. Doing more of the same thing in the same way is easier than changing the way you operate. 7. The business must be something you are psychologically suited to do. This is not the same as loving the area. Some people are more outgoing and social than others. Other people are more reserved. Each is suited to building different types of businesses. Needless to say, a business that demands much personal selling and personal customer contact might not be ideal for the more reserved person. Yet, such a person could very successfully run a mail-order or Internet-based company.
A thriving one- or two-person service business with no inventory, rent or employees can seem like an easy way to make money at first, but when the phone starts ringing off the hook and customers keep coming back for more, homebased business owners who fail to plan often fall victim to their own success. Either they burn out trying to juggle everything themselves or they spend so much time and money hiring people to help them that their profits go down the drain. Fortunately, there are some ways to take your homebased business to new heights without sacrificing your business’s profitability or losing your peace of mind.
Follow these 10 steps to grow your homebased business into the personal and professional success it was meant to be: 1. Focus on a single product or service, and then market it, sell it, promote it—do everything you can to increase sales of that one product or service. While it’s tempting to swing for the fences and try to be all things to all people, it’s often less risky and more profitable to pick a product or two that you can execute really well and just try to get on base. 2. Expand your product line to offer complementary products or services. Once you’ve hit on a product or service that customers really like, don’t miss the opportunity to bring out related items to diversify your product line. Not only does that give your customers a wider selection, but it also makes your products more appealing to retailers who typically like to stock a line of products as opposed to a single item. 3. Find ways to increase sales to your existing customers. It’s a lot cheaper than finding new ones. Even if you can’t expand your product line, you can boost revenues by selling more of your existing product or service to the clients you already have. One easy way to do this is through volume discounts. Especially if your products cost little to produce, offering your customers the chance to buy, say, two T-shirts for the price of one lets you ring up additional sales without sacrificing much profit. Another common practice is to reward loyal customers by giving them a punch card that entitles them to a free product or service for every 10 items they buy. This technique is common at hair salons, car washes and arts-and-crafts stores, but homebased businesses can use it, too. 4. Hire someone to help you out—an employee, a freelancer, an intern, an independent contractor, even your kids. Not only does this free up cash flow by adjusting your expenses to the level of work you bring in, but it also enables you to cultivate a large network of talented people you probably couldn’t afford to hire full time. 5. Create a Web site to advertise your company or sell products online. Thanks to the Internet, it’s no longer necessary to open a store to reach retail customers. For marketers of specialty products like rare books, collectibles and gourmet foods, a Web-based boutique lets you reach millions of shoppers around the world without paying for rent, utilities or garbage collection. 6. Join forces with another business to promote your company. Partnering with a company in a related industry is one of the cheapest and easiest forms of marketing that you can employ. If you make spa products, for example, you may be able to convince a local health club to carry them in its store by offering a discount to its members. Likewise, you can send a free, one-day health club pass to anybody who buys your lotions and scrubs. 7. Target other markets. If you sell to teens, start marketing to college students. If you sell to working moms, maybe your product will work for stay-at-home moms with a few modifications. Another strategy is to take a retail-oriented product or service and sell it wholesale. For example, a homebased catering business that specializes in cakes, pies and other tasty desserts can contact local bakeries to sell its goods on a wholesale basis. While the price you get from the bakeries will be lower (because the bakeries need to mark it up to their customers to make a profit), you’ll sell more products and generate consistent cash flow that you can bank on. 8. Find new and different ways to market your business through e-mail newsletters or by doing guest-speaking gigs or by teaching a class. Marketing your homebased business doesn’t need to involve spending big money on newspaper ads, Yellow Pages listings, or TV or radio spots. Grassroots marketing techniques cost far less and are often much more effective. Most chambers of commerce and community groups are more than happy to provide a forum to a local business owner who’s willing to share his expertise at no charge. Sending out a weekly newsletter is also a great way to get your name out in front of new and potential clients. Thanks to the Internet, you can send out your newsletter via e-mail using online templates and automated delivery systems 9. Expand to another location. That could mean renting “virtual” office space in a business center or by sharing office space with another growing business. 10. Think about turning your business into a franchise or business opportunity. While most homebased businesses remain small, yours may have the potential to hit the big time through franchising, licensing or wholesale distribution. The key question to ask yourself is if your business can be converted into a business format that somebody else could operate (a franchise) or if you have a standardized product or service that someone could resell multiple times (a business opportunity). While you may think that expanding your business requires raising capital, hiring employees, buying equipment and leasing office or warehouse space, it’s often more profitable—and less risky—to license your product to a big corporation with manufacturing capabilities and an existing sales force to do the work for you.

To succeed, entrepreneurs must attract and retain a growing base of satisfied customers. Marketing programs, though widely varied, are all aimed at convincing people to try out or keep using particular products or services. Business owners should carefully plan their marketing strategies and performance to keep their market presence strong. What is Marketing?Marketing is based on the importance of customers to a business and has two important principles: - All company policies and activities should be directed toward satisfying customer needs.
- Profitable sales volume is more important than maximum sales volume.
To best use these principles, a small business should:
- Determine the needs of their customers through market research
- Analyze their competitive advantages to develop a market strategy
- Select specific markets to serve by target marketing
- Determine how to satisfy customer needs by identifying a market mix
Market Research
Successful marketing requires timely and relevant market information. An inexpensive research program, based on questionnaires given to current or prospective customers, can often uncover dissatisfaction or possible new products or services.
Market research will also identify trends that affect sales and profitability. Population shifts, legal developments, and the local economic situation should be monitored to quickly identify problems and opportunities. It is also important to keep up with competitors' market strategies.
Marketing Strategy
A marketing strategy identifies customer groups which a particular business can better serve than its target competitors, and tailors product offerings, prices, distribution, promotional efforts, and services toward those market segments. Ideally, the strategy should address unmet customer needs that offer adequate potential profitability. A good strategy helps a business focus on the target markets it can serve best.
Target Marketing
Owners of small businesses usually have limited resources to spend on marketing. Concentrating their efforts on one or a few key market segments - target marketing - gets the most return from small investments. There are two methods used to segment a market:
1. Geographical segmentation - Specializing in serving the needs of customers in a particular geographical area. For example, a neighborhood convenience store may send advertisements only to people living within one-half mile of the store.
2. Customer segmentation - Identifying those people most likely to buy the product or service and targeting those groups.
Managing the Market Mix
Every marketing program contains four key components:
- Products and Services
- Promotion
- Distribution
- Pricing
These are combined into an overall marketing program.
Products and Services - Product strategies may include concentrating on a narrow product line, developing a highly specialized product or service, or providing a product-service package containing unusually high-quality service.
Promotion - Promotion strategies include advertising and direct customer interaction. Good salesmanship is essential for small businesses because of their limited ability to spend on advertising. Good telphone book advertising is also important. Direct mail is an effective, low-cost medium available to small business.
Price - The right price is crucial for maximizing total revenue. Generally, higher prices mean lower volume and vice-versa; however, small businesses can often command higher prices because of their personalized service.
Distribution - The manufacturer and wholesaler must decide how to distribute their products. Working through established distributors or manufacturers' agents generally is easiest for small manufacturers. Small retailers should consider cost and traffic flow in site selection, especially since advertising and rent can be reciprocal: A low-cost, low-traffic location means spending more on advertising to build traffic.
The nature of the product or service is also important in siting decisions. If purchases are based largely on impulse, then high traffic and visibility are critical. On the other hand, location is less a concern for products or services that customers are willing to go out of their way to find. The recent availability of highly segmented mailing lists, purchased from list brokers, magazines, or other companies, has enabled certain small businesses to operate from any location yet serve national or international markets.
Marketing Performance
After implementing a marketing program, entrepreneurs must evaluate its performance. Every program should have performance standards to compare with actual results. Researching industry norms and past performance will help to develop appropriate standards.
Entrepreneurs should audit their company's performance at least quarterly. The key questions are:
- Is the company doing all it can to be customer-oriented?
- Do employees ensure the customers are satisfied and leave wanting to come back?
- Is it easy for the customer to find what he or she wants at a competitive price?
The Price you Pay for Success Zyman was the man behind Coca Cola's success story. He was the one who initiated to change Coca Cola to New Coke, a product that will change Coca Cola's recipe, taste, packaging, etc. One consultant called this 'A Recipe for Disaster".
Indeed, disaster it was, the campaign lasted only for 80 days losing the company 100 million in dollars. The people hated the taste, they do not want New Coke causing Zyman to be terminated from his post. After a few days, during an interview, Zyman was asked 'did you fail?', and answered 'no!'. 'But did I implemented a wrong strategy? Yes!' Zyman's response to the interview shows us the importance of giving failure a different perspective. And by giving failure a different perspective, it gave the Classic Coke an even stronger market after the turmoil. Then he was re-hired back to work for the firm.
We just could not imagine, what's next for Coca Cola had it not been for Zyman. That mistake Zyman did was responsible for Classic Coca Cola's stronger market grip after New Coke. This shows the importance of giving failure a different definition - as a price you pay for success!
Creating your own 1001 Day Project The Mission: Complete 101 preset tasks in a period of 1001 days.
The Criteria: Tasks must be specific (ie. no ambiguity in the wording) with a result that is either measurable or clearly defined. Tasks must also be realistic and stretching (ie. represent some amount of work on my part).
Why 1001 Days? Many people have created lists in the past - frequently simple goals such as new year's resolutions. The key to beating procrastination is to set a deadline that is realistic. 1001 Days (about 2.75 years) is a better period of time than a year, because it allows you several seasons to complete the tasks, which is better for organising and timing some tasks such as overseas trips or outdoor activities.
Some common goal setting tips: 1. Be decisive. Know exactly what you want, why you want it, and how you plan to achieve it.
2. Stay Focussed. Any goal requires sustained focus from beginning to end. Constantly evaluate your progress.
3. Welcome Failure. Frequently, very little is learned from a venture that did not experience failure in some form. Failure presents the opportunity to learn and makes the success more worthy.
4. Write down your goals. It clarifies your thinking and reinforces your commitment.
5. Keep your goals in sight. Review them frequently, and ensure that they are always at the forefront of your thinking.
1. Make a list of all of the things you did today/this week/this month to help your organization, and file them away. 2. Send a thank-you note 3. Work on your writing skills 4. Design some classy business cards for yourself 5. Send a quick contact email 6. Suggest a solution to a persistent workplace problem 7. Pick up the phone and make a call 8. Work on your language skills 9. Make yourself more presentable 10. Polish your resume 11. Read something on topics you plan to be facing in the future in your career 12. Prepare some comments in advance for your next meeting 13. Work on your public speaking skills 14. Clean your work area 15. This is one good Idea to have a fun weekend with your family... and still save money.
souce: http://www.thesimpledollar.com/page/2/ Quite often, Saturday is my worst day of the week for spending money. My wife and my son and I almost always wind up doing something that costs money. Yet, I recognize that the parts of the weekend that I’ll remember on Monday are the parts where we merely spent time together, not the parts where we spent money on stuff we didn’t really need. As part of our attempt at an ultra-frugal May, we decided to just spend this Saturday around the house - with all of the house-hunting excitement, we thought it would be a fun way to unwind. Here are twelve things we did that we probably would not have done on a normal Saturday that saved us money. We had banana pancakes for breakfast. We had three overripe bananas, so we just mashed them up with a fork, mixed them with two cups of flower, two teaspoons of baking powder, half a teaspoon of salt, an egg, and a cup and a half of milk. We just mixed it all together and suddenly we had pancake batter out of just the stuff we had sitting around the house. Banana pancakes are delicious. My wife and I each pulled out three CDs we hadn’t heard in a while and played them in a small CD/clock in the kitchen. It cost only a penny or two of electricity and my wife got to hear me sing along badly with The Smiths’ “Girlfriend in a Coma” while my son danced. We wrapped graduation gifts in the comics pages from the Sunday paper and old New Yorker covers. They looked bright, visually interesting, and kitschy, and the cost was less than a penny’s worth of tape. We had homemade soup and sandwiches for lunch. The sandwiches were merely some leftover grated cheese from a meal earlier this week between two pieces of bread and cooked on a grate over wood. The soup was just chicken boullion with some leftover pieces of chicken in it and a few chopped-up vegetables. Cost: minimal. Taste: great. We deep-cleaned things. Mostly, just things that we skip over because we often don’t have the time. Lots of window-spraying and such with our homemade cleaning supplies. While our son napped, we went through every house that we looked at and made a final ranking of all of them. This was actually really fun, because we were largely on the same page with everything. We have one house that we love and one that we really really like and everything else falls in behind. Basically, this was good conversation. We walked to the park and back. This burnt multiple hours, as our son wanted to swing on the swings and go down the slide and laugh and play and all that good stuff. Lifting him up to the top of the slide (he can’t quite handle the ladder yet) over and over again was a good workout, too - lifting a twenty five pound toddler from the ground to well over your head every fifteen seconds for most of an hour can be exhausting. We had fresh asparagus, homemade poor man quesadillas, and grapes for dinner. The asparagus was out of a friend’s garden, picked only a day or so ago. The poor man’s quesadillas was just using the remaining cheese and putting it between two flour tortillas then grilling them. The grapes were easy, too. Another really cheap and rather quick homemade meal, but that was because we were all worn out. All of us wrote letters to people. I wrote a letter to an old friend, as did my wife; our son went crazy with crayons on a sheet of paper writing a letter to his grandparents. My wife and I had a very romantic evening after our son went to sleep. Hey, that’s a free activity! We spent an hour reading together. My wife and I just cuddled up near each other under a down comforter and read. I finished off a book; she got part of the way through one. We never turned on the television once. It didn’t come on all day, even after our son went to bed. The entire day was incredibly fun and it cost almost nothing at all. Who needs to spend a lot of cash to have an enjoyable, happy, memorable Saturday?
- Don’t buy depreciating items on credit (cellphones, cars, appliances, clothes, shoes, etc.) buy them in cash , save and wait till such time you can afford them. Settle for items you can only afford. At current market interest, your total payment is almost 3 times the selling price by the time you finished paying your amortization if you buy on credit, while the market value of your purchased item already went down to near 50% or more of the original price.
- Beware of marketing promos . There is no such thing as a “0” interest loan amortization . Sellers actually included the interest in your monthly amortization but advertise 6 or 12 months “0” interest. If you want to buy a “0” interest item in cash, you should ask the seller to give you the “interest free” price or tell them to remove the “hidden interest” in exchange for cash purchase. Or ask for discounts for cash payments.
- Compare prices for the same item in different stores if you have time before actually buying .
- If the item has no price tag, you should ask for discounts on the asking price of the seller.
- Avoid impulse buying especially expensive items. Think it over for a day or two then decide if you really need it “now”. Control your spending habit. If you don’t , you will always complain your income is not enough.
- Keep only ONE credit card, use it for convenience NOT for credit. Always pay the full amount once you get the bill. Choose a reliable credit card company . Sometimes you will encounter malfunctioning Point of Sale systems, tell the establishment to call the credit card company directly and then ask for approval via phone. As much as possible, always have cash on hand or in your ATM card and use it as the Credit card backup.
- Don’t get a Gold Credit Card if you are after the “being rich” perception. You will pay 2x the membership fee as the regular card . And your spending temptation will be 2x as powerful as well.
- Always save at least 20% of your income. Opportunity always comes, and usually those with “cash on hand” gets it.
- Invest a percentage of your savings to generate more income. There is no harm in not investing and just playing safe on bank savings accounts, but your money will earn more if you invest. (stocks, bonds, mutual funds, real estates , start a business etc.) There are risks involved in investing money and sometimes you loose your investment. But the lesson learned in that failed investment is usually worth a lot more. Knowledge and experience gained is priceless in this information age. Start your investment activities while you are employed , it will prepare you in your retirement years.
- Be aware of “Get Rich-Quick” Investment scams. If the promised interest rate return on investment is “unusually large” compared to the actual market rate, most probably it is an investment scam. No legal business will pay you double or triple the current market interest rate . If somebody promised an interest rate of 5% or more per month, that will be a 60% interest rate per annum. No business can generate that big profit for their investors. It is usually a scam and they will use your investment money to pay the interest of the other investors . This is commonly called as “pyramiding” it will crumble at some point in time only the pyramid owner will be rich and ran off with your money.
- Conduct garage sales at least every 2 years to dispose of your old-unwanted items and generate additional income. You will also learn a lot in the “garage sales process”. Your “garbage” is usually a precious item to others. Sell low and sell only those you think are worth buying. Donate those that are not . You will get a good reputation as seller and will be usually successful in your other future “selling activities”. Donate or give for free all unsold items at the end of your garage sale. You will feel great happiness – and that is priceless.
- Work hard and be a responsible employee. You will be financially rewarded accordingly when your business grows as a result of your collective hard work. A good work attitude is contagious and will always bring harmony in the work place.
- Live within your means. Never mind if you have old clothes, old shoes, old cars, old and in-expensive cellphones/appliances , small house in a non-exclusive area, etc. because it is what you can afford for now. It is much better than having all the new luxuries that you can’t afford and then crack your brains every pay day thinking how to pay all your bills and loans. This is called “pay-check to pay-check” living. A lot of people have fallen to this “trap” mostly brought about by credit companies and bank loans (credit cards, loan sharks, etc.) We all make mistakes and had experienced this lifestyle brought about by modern living one time or another. The more important this is to learn from our mistakes.

This is one of my faves. It mainly features red hot creatures with "haste" abilities. "Traydor!" as anyone will say.
